We’re almost ready! This Saturday our new exhibition ‘Amsterdam’ opens, featuring photos by Cruijff and Windig, among others.

Op 12 april opent Dof een nieuwe tentoonstelling met onder andere een serie zeldzame foto’s van een piepjonge Johan Cruijff, gefotografeerd tussen 1965 en 1967. Ruim zestig jaar geleden, op 15 november 1964, debuteerde de legendarische nummer veertien (met een goal) voor Ajax. Hoewel Michels het nog niet de tijd vond om Cruijff een vaste plaats in het elftal
te geven, kreeg hij op 24 oktober 1965 tegen DWS toch een basisplaats. Met Cruijff in de spits bleef Ajax vervolgens zestien wedstrijden op rij ongeslagen. #ajaxfc #cruijff #amsterdam

Done! Just in time for Christmas😅. These beautiful frames were made by Joris. A glass slide of a study for a shark from 1900 was given a hardwood lightbox, and 4 microphotographs from Braunschweig were mounted in an elevated plexiglass frame.

Sold yesterday a photogravure Stanislaw Walery.
The portfolio from which this image came was titled “NUS” (“Naked”) and was credited in the title to Laryew, an anagram used in an effort to separate Stanislas Walery’s erotic work with his more formal photography, as well as the work of his father. NUS included 100 heliogravures of nude women in various poses ranging from classical to modernist; some featured stark, angular lighting and architectural details, lending them a machine-age, Art Deco style. It is thought that these women are dancers from the popular Folies Bergere, a subject he frequently revisited.NUS considered among the best examples of experimental Art Deco photography.

SOLD Moon Stereoscopic Series No.VI

The Moon itself is impressive, but the effort required to take these pictures makes it particularly impressive.

To create a stereo image requires two slightly different images to be overlaid with mostly the same detail, but enough subtle differences to make the image three-dimensional. However, taking pictures of something as distant as the Moon would require the two lenses to be incredibly far apart. An alternative method, is to take two photographs that are very far apart in time. That is the method that was used by Warren De La Rue to take these particular stereo-images. For example, the previous set of Moon pictures are separated by more than a year.

The first one was taken on 27 February 1858, and the second on 11 September 1859. The first was when the Moon was 14.2 days old, and in the second it was 14.8 days old, allowing the two images to be just different enough to create the stereo-effect when observed through a viewer.

To do all this the chemist, astronomer and gentleman-adventurer Warren de la Rue (1815–89) set about designing this large telescope for his own private observatory near London. It was completed in 1849, and improved when he moved to a better observatory nearby in 1857. De la Rue wasn’t the first to take photographs through a telescope; but his telescope was, as far as we know, the first to be designed and built with photography in mind.

These photographs are in excellent condition, professionally framed and for sale in our online store. Other examples of these series are part of museum collections in the Metropolitan Museum New York and the Victoria and Albert museum in Londen.

For Documenta 7, the artist Joseph Beuys proposed a plan to have 7000 oaks trees planted across the city of Kassel, each tree accompanied with basalt stone, 4 feet high above the ground.

In this picture we see Beuys standing on a mountain of 7000 basalt stones that were piled up in front of the Museum Fridericianum at the beginning of the project.

In an interview Joseph Beuys states “The planting of seven thousand oak trees is thus only a symbolic beginning. And such a symbolic beginning requires a marker, in this instance a basalt column. The intention of such a tree-planting event is to point up the transformation of all of life, of society, and of the whole ecological system.’ ‘I believe that planting these oaks is necessary, not only in biospheric terms, that is to say, in the context of matter and ecology, but in that it will raise ecological consciousness – raise it increasingly, in the course of the years to come, because we shall never stop planting.’ – Joseph Beuys, 1982

The planting continued for five years throughout public spaces in the inner city, negotiated through site proposals submitted by residents, councils, schools and other local associations. The last tree was planted at the opening of Documenta 8 in June 1987 by his son, Beuys passed away in 1964 at the age of 64.

Description: Artur de Sousa, known by his nickname Pinga (July 30, 1909 – July 12, 1963) was a Portuguese footballer and later coach. On 5 May of 1935, Pinga scored two late goals against Spain to complete an iconic comeback, from 3-0 down up to 3-3. One goal via a penalty kick. The match was held at the 'Stadium of Light', Benfica, and watched by 50,000 people.

This photo is also a good example of elementary retouching on prints. We can see that the outline of the shirt and legs were enhanced with a brush 90 years ago, probably to make Pinga stand out more.

Fun fact: Pinga was born in the same village, Funchal, capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, as the famous Christiano Ronaldo.
